I
got my first camera when I was 10; that would be 1956. It was
a Kodak Starlet camera, black plastic, that took 120 roll film.
It had a removable flash unit that took the miniature flash bulbs.
The
flash bulbs were coated with a thin layer of plastic; when the
bulb went off, the plastic melted and bubbled, but the glass did
not shatter. They were called "miniature" because they
were much smaller than the standard flash bulbs, but they are
huge compared to today's halogen bulbs.
I took many pictures with this camera. I took it on a school outing to Niagara Falls in 1957, and took many pictures of my family. In 1959 I started high school, and used it to take pictures of the Mikado. I didn't have a lot of money, but my allowance did cover the cost of film development providing I didn't shoot more than one roll of film a month.
Things have changed now. Film has virtually disappeared and digital has taken over. But the techniques of photography remain the same. The way we posed people and took nature shots 45 years ago are still valid.
