Sounds like you are still talking about reflective metering. Light meters are for incident metering which measures the light coming TOWARDS the subject. Light meters can also do reflective metering for subjects at a distance.

One of the most common human error... Rotate the sensor to the opposite direction from the lighting source, that is how light meter get proper readings.Funny everyone don't go down that direction.
